I've realised the possible reason why I'd rather keep quiet about my rare achievements: life has taught me I am a one-timer. I have a still vivid childhood memory to illustrate this. I was hopeless at anything requiring physical skill not to mention coordination at school. I was around 9 and the annual school contest between classes was just around the corner. All events were about speed and skillfulness. The contestants were chosen in the last PE lesson. And miracles of miracles when it was my turn to lead a ball with the help of a rod, my rod simply did whatever was needed, not a movement out of time, outta place, ball rolled like crazy and I was elected into the team of the best. On the big day, though, I was just my usual self and though I hoped against hope that if I had been able to do it once, I would be capable a second time too, I ended up AT THE OTHER END of the whole f*cking school yard desperately wanting to render my ball under control when all the other teams have long finished. Do you know how it tasted? So, all is fine with my worldly successes, but for their peculiar bitter aftertaste. |
